I first touched down in North Carolina in 2009, scheduled between a Royal Caribbean theatrical lighting contract and a new gig designing runway shows for national hair-and-fashion tours. California rents (and the near-impossible dream of owning) stopped adding up when I was already living out of suitcases ten months a year, so I pointed the moving truck toward Hillsborough.
Within twelve months I had closed on my first NC property—a $62,000 1941 Mebane home that taught me drywall, patience, and the thrill of unlocking a front door that’s actually mine. Three more purchases followed across South Durham, Raleigh, and a beach cottage in Kill Devil Hills, each one a masterclass in markets, inspectors, and creative financing.
When kids started arriving in 2012 I traded spotlights for startup life, launching a nationwide AV company that powered the biggest scientific and engineering conferences in the country. We scaled to $1.7 M in annual revenue, then watched every contract evaporate overnight when COVID slammed the brakes on live events for nearly three years. While the industry sat idle, I doubled down on the passion that had been simmering since my first 1941 rehab: real estate. I studied market trends, earned my broker’s license, and turned the hard lessons of four personal purchases into a playbook I now use to guide buyers through the Triangle’s fast-moving market.
